O-1 EXTRAORDINARY ABILITY
The O-1 visa category can be utilized by individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary ability in the arts, sciences, education, business or sports.
This category is intended for individuals who are at the top of their fields and have received national or international acclaim for their accomplishments.
The individual is required to demonstrate that they meet the specific requirements by showing evidence of their accomplishments.
The applicant must have an offer related to their field.
The P-1 category can be utilized by athletes who are unable to meet the "extraordinary ability standard" but can demonstrate that they are coming to the U.S. to participate in an event with a distinguished reputation.
Athletes with contracts in the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and MLS are only required to demonstrate that they have a major league contract to qualify for the visa.
B-1 BUSINESS VISITOR
The B-1 visa category can be utilized by professional athletes seeking to visit the United States to compete. B-1 authorization is dependent on the athlete receiving no salary or remuneration other than potential prize money for competing.
For athletes that are unable to meet that O-1 and P-1 requirements above, the H-2B visa allows the athlete to be granted temporary work authorization so long as the sponsoring team is labor certified by the Department of Labor.
B-2 AMATEUR ATHLETES
Amateur athletes that are receiving no payment, other than incidental expenses, are eligible to apply for a B-2 visa as visitors for pleasure.
